A Thousand Memories

(Copyright 2005 Blake Rogers)

"The songs 'A Thousand Memories' and 'Original Organic Gardener' were written about my mother's mother, Florence Belloff.  I have many wonderful childhood and adult memories of her house and garden.  Largely due to her influence, I do not want to live in a place where I cannot make compost and plant trees.  I hope she will forgive me for use of the term 'Granny'.  When my cousins or I called her that, she thought it was quite disrespectful."

I’ll always remember her with a wrinkled smiling face

Sparkling eyes the color of the sky

Brown skin and snow white hair beneath a wide brimmed hat

Working hard without a question why

And she taught me to sing this song...

I’ll come and get you in a taxi honey you better be ready by half past eight

Now dearie don’t be late I wanna be there when the band starts playing

Remember when we get there honey ~ two steps I’m gonna have ‘em~ all

I’m gonna dance off both of my shoes when they play the Jellyroll Blues

Tomorrow night at the Darktown Strutters Ball, some Ball

She taught me to love the earth, she taught me to love the rain

Smiling as it fell from the clouds above

She worked the soil with her hands and you know I won’t forget

The sweet fruit that was her labor of love

And she taught me to sing this song...

There was an old codger and he had a wooden leg

He had no tobacco ~ no tobacco could he beg

There was another codger he was sly as a fox

He always had tobacco in his old tobacco box

Said codger number one "Will you give me a chew?"

Said codger number two "I’ll be hanged if I do!"

If you save all your pennies and you’re sly as a fox

You’ll always have tobacco in your ole tobacco box

Now I don’t see her anymore cause she lives so far away

I still have a thousand memories

I’d like to tell her how I feel but the words don’t seem to be enough

To thank her for everything she’s given me

So I sing this song...

I’ll come and get you in a taxi honey, better be ready ‘bout half past eight

Now dearie don’t be late
