"The songs 'A Thousand Memories' and 'Original Organic Gardener' were written about my mother's mother, Florence Belloff. I have many wonderful childhood and adult memories of her house and garden. Largely due to her influence, I do not want to live in a place where I cannot make compost and plant trees. I hope she will forgive me for use of the term 'Granny'. When my cousins or I called her that, she thought it was quite disrespectful." |
My Grandma, she loved her garden
But there’s no such thing as a green thumb
That’s what she always said
It takes hard work and water and most important of all
That old black smelly compost and you’ll really have a ball
She was the original organic gardener
The secret’s in the compost, that’s what she used to say
She’d spread that old black stuff all over the garden
You could watch that fruit get bigger every day
Now Granny didn’t use any chemicals
No pesticides, no synthetic fertilizers, no sir-ee
She always said you know that stuff will shorten your life
She ought to know her father lived to be one hundred & three!
She was the original organic gardener
You’ve got to have that compost, that’s what she used to say
She’d spread that smelly stuff all over the garden
You could watch that fruit get bigger every day
There ain’t many short people in my family
It must be in our genes, science says that makes us tall
As for me I’m not so sure that it’s genetic you see
Because before I worked with that compost I was puny and small
Thanks to that original organic gardener (I’m six feet now)
The secret’s in the compost, that’s what she used to say
She’d spread that old black stuff all over the garden
You could watch them kids get bigger every day
Hey hey!
You could watch that fruit get bigger every day
