HIGHWAY BLUES

(Copyright 2005 Blake Rogers)

"For the past three years I have been fortunate enough to spend a month or two each year in the Buckhorn Canyon near Fort Collins, Colorado.  The land I own has been in my family since my great grandparent's time.  There are three cabins that all need work.  Oh darn!  I really do get a lot of work done, but I also take time to enjoy the mountains and play music with friends."

It’s four o’clock in the morning, the air is relatively cool

I’m east bound for Needles and I’m feeling like a fool

Kissed my woman goodbye this morning, she’s all comfy in our bed

And I need this two lane blacktop just like a hole in the head

I’m bound for Colorado, got some work to do

Said goodbye to the double nickel, I’ve got them highway blues

Doing eighty miles an hour plus, I’m on Highway 78

I’m flying across this southwest desert because I don’t want to be late

I know it’s gonna be hot today when that old sun comes up

And I don’t have air conditioning in this old pickup truck

Still I’m bound for Colorado, put on my highway shoes

Said goodbye to earthquake valley, I got them highway blues

I’m driving by that desert ocean, feel that cool salt air

Imperial farmers are already working, smell the alfalfa everywhere

Hot coffee in Westmoreland, cold water that I need

I’m breezin’ into Brawley, so I’d best watch my speed

Clock says Five AM, bank sign says eighty four degrees too

And I’m bound for Colorado, I got them highway blues

Now I’m northbound on US 95, sun is rising on my right

See the Colorado River, ain’t that a cool blue sight

I got 97 miles of nothin’ between me and the Interstate

And I’ll be flying east to Flagstaff, Lord I just can’t wait

‘Cause I’m bound for Colorado, see those Rocky Mountains too

I’m sleeping tonight in New Mexico, I got them highway blues

Morning sun is getting higher, San Bernardino County line

Two lane blacktop is getting straighter, and this ol’ desert’s really blowin’ my mind

I made a stop in Vidal Junction, write down more words to this song

Now there’s a semi-truck loaded with sheet rock, hope I don’t have to drive this slow very long

And I’m bound for the Rocky Mountains, there’s nothing I can do

But my engine’s running hot and I got them low down highway blues
